The Lake District National Park Visitor Centre at Brockhole is always a great family day out. To make it even better just add watersports! Sit on top Kayak hire is just £10 per person, per hour!
School holidays (and weekends) from Easter to October you can find lakes leisure Windermere down at the Brockhole lakeshore.
You can just turn up and go out but to guarantee your preferred boat and timeslot at popular times you are advised to book by calling Brockhole reception on 015394 46601.
We have rowing boats, sit-on-top kayaks and sailing on offer with options to hire or have some tuition. Rain or shine, young or old, there’s fun to be had afloat at Brockhole.
Our wide, stable boats are perfect for getting the family afloat. Minimum age is subject to size (children must wear one of our buoyancy aids; as a guide our smallest buoyancy aid will fit children from 3 years) and the maximum capacity of each boat is 5 adults. You will need to dress for the weather but (unless it’s raining!) you should keep reasonably dry with this activity. £20 per boat, per hour (max 5 people)
These simple boats are great fun and even those with little or no paddling experience should soon get to grips with a kayak paddle. Stable, easy to control and easy to get on and off you can be out and enjoying being afloat on Windermere within minutes! We have a fleet of tandem boats for hire allowing an adult to get afloat with a younger or less confident paddler or just two mates to have fun paddling together! We also have a limited number of single boats (we recommend pre-booking if you want to guarantee a solo boat).
Over 16 years can hire a boat and get afloat after a short briefing. Children from 6 years must be accompanied by an adult over 18 if hiring. For those 6-16 years wishing to give the kayaks a try without an accompanying adult we offer tuition with an instructor leading the session, teaching paddling skills and confidence and having lots of fun! Adults are also welcome to book tuition.
It is almost impossible to stay completely dry paddling a sit-on-top (expect wet feet and a wet bottom!) however we do have wetsuits available for you to wear if you wish or alternatively come along wearing clothing and footwear you don’t mind getting wet and bring a change of clothes. You will also be provided with (and required to wear) a buoyancy aid. £10 per person, per hour.
Our sailing dinghy can take up to 4 people afloat with an instructor to show you the ropes. If the wind and weather suits you’ll get a chance to take control and steer the boat. Like rowing this is a reasonably dry activity but you should dress for the weather and you may get a bit splashed. We provide buoyancy aids for you to wear. £14 per person, per hour.
If you wish to hire our dinghy without an instructor you must be able to show evidence of RYA Level 2 Dinghy Sailing skills either by production of your logbook/certificate or by undergoing a short skills assessment (with an additional charge). £25 per boat, per hour.
