Windermere Windsurfers on the Water Beating Cancer
On Sunday 2nd May 2010 two intrepid windsurfers will be attempting to sail twice the length of Windermere to raise funds for “Windsurfing for Cancer Research”. As part of the charity’s “Sunrise Sunset” event Jo Rose and Kathryn Jackson will set out at 05:32 and windsurf until 20:46 that evening.
The pair, who both coach windsurfing at lakes leisure Windermere, haven’t yet settled on the final route but hope to take in both Fellfoot and Waterhead, finishing at the lakes leisure centre at Millerground where friends and colleagues will be waiting to welcome them back ashore.
Kathryn Jackson said, “We are hoping to complete a full circuit of the lake but that will be a tall order if the wind is very light. There could be too much or not enough breeze and the water temperature is going to be pretty low so we are very much going to be at the mercy of the elements but with the sunrise to sunset element of the attempt we at least know we have time on our side! However far we get completing over 15 hours of windsurfing is a challenge in itself.”
For those not keen on the early start and long hours afloat lakes leisure are also welcoming competent watersports enthusiasts to the centre from 3pm to windsurf, sail or paddle a mile or more and get sponsored for W4CR.
The event will kick off National Windsurfing Week and lakes leisure Windermere will be encouraging anyone who would like to experience the fun of this exhilarating sport by offering half price (£10) 1.5 hour introductory sessions throughout the week.
